How Important is Design?
Very
Nothing is more important than pleasing the audience. The object of webdesign is to visually stimulate viewers to explore further, better understand, and/or lull them to buy products or services.
Even the best content, if presented poorly, will lose to inferior ideas wrapped in superior presentation.
First Thing's First
Before beginning to design a website there are a few things that must be established:
- What is the ultimate goal or purpose of the website?
- Who is the target audience?
- What does the target audience want or expect?
- What does the website offer to the target audience?
These key insights would describe a reasonably accurate perception of how to approach a design that meets the client's needs and exceed their viewer's expectations.
Catering to a Tough Crowd
Knowing what the client wants to express is half the battle. It is the visitors who pay the client's bills. A website must cater to visitors' expectations before the owner's. "The customer is always right." still applies online.
Today's websurfers are fairly experienced web jockeys. They demand and expect:
- Search results within 3 clicks or less
- Fast page download speeds (less than 10 seconds on dial-up)
- Muted advertisements
- NO unsolicited popups
- Plugin independence
- Squint-free reading
...all while they anticipate a unique but visually appealing layout.
Designing for Hand-Held Devices
There are few opportunities to design for PDAs and other hand-held devices. It is not always practical to surf the internet via a mobile phone but there are occasions when it is necessary.
