Web Development? Isn't that the same as Web Design?
To a layperson "web development" sounds as if it is synonymous with "web design". However there is a marked difference.
Web development characterizes the engine, transmission, and electrical system under the hood and behind the dash of website design.
Whereas website design focuses on pampering the human element, web development deals with mechanical grease and sludge behind the scenes making web applications possible.
Browser-Side Scripts
JavaScript is the best known browser-dependent script on the Internet. Highly customizeable it has become a very useful tool for executing browser-end interaction with website visitors.
JavaScript performs an infinite amount of useful functions. Some of the more common power:
- Drop-down menus
- Image transition rollovers
- Slideshows
- Calculations
- Form validations
Javascript has also been used to entertain visitors with nifty visual effects.
Unfortunately it's been used to create popup windows and other irritants. It's become such a problem that many people (who know how) turn JavaScript off on their browsers effectively rendering JavaScript heavy websites useless.
Server-Side Scripts
ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, JSP, and Coldfusion are a few of the best known server-side technologies. These scripts execute on the web server before the information uploads to a visitor's browser window.
Server-side scripts are primarily used to create:
- Shopping carts
- Visitor logins
- Personalized portals
- Self-regulating databases
- Website searches
- Visitor tracking
...and much, much more.
D-Splay.com's capabilities
Website development has had a focus on using ASP and JavaScript to create tools and applications for my clients.
I promote the use of practical JavaScripts and server-side scripting that compliment the website design and support visitor interactivity.
