Let's get digital

Digital images don't exist souly to toss beside text as some sort of virtual garnish. Digital images play an essential part in communicating ideas to viewers.

Well conceived images complement the message of the website, article, or text by visually associating intangible ideas with visual queues of tangible objects.

Creating and/or editing digital images can be a lengthy process sometimes eating up more time than website designing itself. Often images can dictate how the website is to be designed.

Overdoing It

There can be too much of a good thing. Mimicking printed magazine covers and formats may be the ultimate in artistic expression and print design but it isn't the ultimate in download speed.

Digital images should rarely be used to replace masses of text. Replacing headings is one thing. Replacing whole swathes of valuable search engine realestate with an unsearchable image of text is quite another.

Forget Text... Gimme Pictures!

It's hard to deny that some of the largest online industries are heavily dependent on quality images and movies. When the soul purpose of a website is to display images - presentation and optimization are everything.

At this point optimal design is practically an open book. It is still worthy to maintain minimalist efforts to keep file sizes small and formats simple. But since it's pictures or even multimedia that visitors are expecting they are probably more inclined to accept lengthy downloads.

D-Splay.com has developed two image-based websites, one for a flowering photographer as an online portfolio, the other for a photographic entreprenuership specializing in equitarian events. In both cases we aimed at presenting a clean, original design that is quick to download and easy to navigate.
